Big If
George W. Bush enjoys high approval ratings (though lower than they had once been). This is largely a function of the American people's need to believe that they have a president who is capable, accomplished, and legitimate (qualities that George W. Bush does not possess). Before September 11, Bush had anemic approval ratings (with good reason) of barely fifty percent. Had 9/11 not occurred, the Enron scandal would have hit Bush much harder than it did. In addition, had there been no 9/11, the news media (that Bush bemoans as biased) wouldn't have buried the fact that Bush's people stole the election (there is a new analysis on this; click here). It's no big surprise: Bush's life story (no, not the phony campaign bio book A Charge To Keep) consists entirely of catching breaks from others (usually Daddykins's rich friends). It's time to change that.
