NPR Asked Mara Liasson To Reconsider Fox News Appearances:
Executives at National Public Radio recently asked the network’s top political correspondent, Mara Liasson, to reconsider her regular appearances on Fox News because of what they perceived as the network’s political bias, two sources familiar with the effort said.
I addressed similar issues in 2004.

Sarah Palin: Birther
In an interview with right-wing radio talk show host Rusty Humphries:

HUMPHRIES: Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?

PALIN: Um, I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think enough members of the electorate still want answers.

HUMPHRIES: Do you think it's a fair question to be looking at?

PALIN: I think it's a fair question, just like I think past associations, past voting records, all of that is fair game. You know, I gotta tell you, too, I think our campaign, the McCain-Palin campaign, didn't do a good enough job in that area. We didn't call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were, and perhaps what their future plans were, and I don't think that was fair to voters, to not have done our jobs as candidates and as a campaign to bring to light a lot of things that now we're seeing made manifest in the administration.

HUMPHRIES: I mean, truly, if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama's past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?

PALIN: Hey, you know, that's a great point. That weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about, that Trig isn't my real son, a lot of people say, "Well, you need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he's your kid," which we have done, but yeah, so maybe we should reverse that and use the same type of thinking on the other one.

ADL Report on Glenn Beck and Right-Wing Extremists Has At Least One Major Error glenn beck
A recent opinion piece by Tim Rutten on Glenn Beck is worth reading. Rutten quotes a passage from a recent ADL Report "Rage Grows In America: Anti-Government Conspiracies":
The report notes that while "other conservative media hosts, such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, routinely attack Obama and his administration, typically on partisan grounds, they have usually dismissed or refused to give a platform to the conspiracy theorists and anti-government extremists." By contrast, "Beck and his guests have made a habit of demonizing President Obama and promoting conspiracy theories about his administration. ... Beck has even gone so far as to make comparisons between Hitler and Obama."
The fact is that Limbaugh and Hannity have both cozyed up to anti-government extremists and have promoted paranoid conspiracy theories. Although Limbaugh was not a supporter of David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, during the Clinton years, Limbaugh vilified the Clinton administration for their actions in Waco, suggesting that the Clinton administration targeted the Branch Davidians because they were "people of faith." Similarly, Hannity's radio show was an early forum for indicted extremist Hal Turner's racist and extremist rants.

Limbaugh and Hannity have also been the proponents of discredited conspiracy theories long after they have been debunked. Years after investigations conducted by the United States Park Police, the Department of Justice, the FBI, the United States Congress, Independent Counsel Robert B. Fiske, and Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr found that Clinton deputy White House counsel Vince Foster's death in Fort Marcy Park was a suicide, both Limbaugh and Hannity have suggested that foul play by the Clintons was responsible for Foster's death (Hannity also defended the Reverend Jerry Falwell's fleecing of his flock when he sold bogus VHS tapes claiming that the Clintons murdered Foster).

Addendum: Quick: Someone give Glenn Beck Some Cocaine!
Although I love to party, I hate cocaine and I have never liked or associated with people who use cocaine. Every coke user I have met has been a narcissistic asshole. I think it's not only because coke is a stimulant but because it makes people feel good without having done anything good.

Glenn Beck used to be a cokehead. What's really messed up about Beck is that he's become a more of a douche-bag after quitting cocaine! At the very least, he's more paranoid).

How Could They Think That? A Brief History of Paranoid Wing-nut America
(Updated below)
I was dismayed but not surprised when I heard about the recent poll that found that a slim majority (52 percent) of Republicans think that ACORN stole the 2008 election for Obama. It's appalling that the majority of a major U.S. party could think of such a silly thing. Essentially these people believe that hundreds of thousands of illegal votes were cast in order McCain to have been the actual victor in the electoral college One of the consequences of Bush administrations U.S. Attorneys Dismissal scandal was that when given massive resources, U.S. attorneys could find few actual cases of the practice occurring (this is a suucinct explanation about why American voter fraud is extremely rare).

The American Fringe: From the 1950s to the Present
Back in the 1950's the right's fringe consisted of the John Birch Society, a fringe group that held the view that President Eisenhower was a dupe of the communists. The Birchers never exceeded more than a few hundred thousand because prominent American marginalized them. Generally harmless cranks, the Birchers became the butt of jokes about their distrust of fluoridation and their campaign to impeach Earl Warren.

However, starting in the 1970's, some wealthy members of the American right invested heavily in right-wing organizations, think tanks, and the media, allowing previously fringe ideas to attain some legitimacy. Also, during the 1970s, many fundamentalists--previously apolitical--created a right-wing sectarian movement that aligned with the Republican Party (here's a blog post I wrote about how the sectarian right switched from religious paranoia in the 1980s to political paranoia in the 1990s).

In the 1990's, the paranoid right-wing fringe grew due to a few developments. The first is the rise of right-wing talk radio. Limbaugh and his clones amassed large audiences of listeners in which they spread stories about the Clintons murdering political enemies as well as friends who allegedly knew too much (such as Vince Foster, Ron Brown, and dozens of others).

Since then, political paranoia flourished for several reasons. The left failed to respond to the right in the 1990's--the Clintons and their allies were feckless and inept. The political left didn't understand the importance of media. The mainstream right refused to marginalize their fringe in the 1990s--e.g., William F. Buckley refused to repudiate Pat Robertson's bizarre conspiracy theories, even though they were just as loony as the ones promulgated by the Birchers.

The wing-nut right flourished during the 2000s; however, as the fringe became more dominent in the GOP, moderates began leaving the party. The result is that the birthers, deather, and tenthers became a bigger part of a rump party. Also, in the 2000s, a progressive media infrastructure emerged to marginalize the fringe right for its paranoid conspiracy theories.

This quick history of the paranoid right not only explains why so many Republicans believe is silly things like massive voter fraud, it also explains why so many of the teabagger crowd express the notion that this is no longer their country (watch this priceless video of a "scared" town hall protester "I want my America back"). With the emergence of powerful media outlets such as Media Matters for America, and media personalities such as Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow, members of the hard right are now the laughingstocks that the Birchers were in the 1960's.

Addendum: It Doesn't Add Up I don't have time to do a full analysis on what ACORN would have needed to do in order to steal the election. Just eye-balling the 2008 election results shows that it is absurd for anyone to seriously think that ACORN could have stolen the election for Obama. McCain needs a swing of 97 electoral votes to be the winner. Let look at some of the electoral votes that went to Obama in close races: North Carolina, Nebraska 2nd district, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and New Mexico--that's 93 electoral votes, not enough to put McCain over the top. Had McCain been the actual winner in these contests, it would have meant that ACORN stuffed over 1,300,000 illegal Obama votes into ballot boxes in those states and in Nebraska's 2nd district.

UPDATE: Cenk Uygur on how the media are also at fault:
This is very similar to when 69% of the country in September, 2003 believed that Saddam Hussein was personally responsible for 9/11. No evidence of that whatsoever, but people believed it. Why?

It's because conservative media puts these messages out there non-stop without any effective challenge. They poison the conversation with absolute falsehoods and no one fights back. Who's fighting for ACORN now? Who is telling people that ACORN did not steal any votes in 2008? There is a continual battering ram of lies from one side and no response from the other.

But this is not just the fault of Democrats or progressives in not fighting back well enough. It is the job of the press to inform the American public. And obviously they're doing a terrible job. They constantly call everything 50-50. They're scared to death of saying that one side is simply lying. They cower behind the mantle of neutrality instead of challenging all sides to tell the truth. You're not supposed to be neutral in reporting lies and facts. You're supposed to be on the side of truth.

Who's Afraid of a Fox News Nerdlinger? The Democratic Party's House Attack Dog, That's Who

When Representative Alan Grayson (D-FL) started making headlines over his strident comments on the floor of the House about health care, I'm glad I didn't jump on the bandwagon and write glowingly about him--I suspected that Grayson was too good to be true. An recent incident with one of Bill O'Reilly's flunkies shows that Grayson is not ready for prime time. This is sad but not surprising considering the recent history of the Democratic Party. Democrats don't know what time it is.

Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory
As a result of Grayson's emergence as a player in the national media, Bill O'Reilly repeatedly requested that Grayson appear on his Fox News show; Grayson refused. I think this was a squandered opportunity because it would have been an opportunity for Grayson to not only speak in favor of health care reform, but because Grayson would be appearing live, he could have gotten off a few zingers at the expense of O'Reilly and FNC (e.g, here) It's a pity that Grayson wussed out.

O'Reilly wasn't deterred. He send Griff Jenkins, one of his flunky producers to the hallway outside of Grayson's office to interview him. Instead of facing Jenkins, Grayson hid in his office and called the Capitol Hill police (who could do nothing because Jenkins had a right to be there). After hiding in his office for a few hours, Grayson finally met with Jenkins and his performance was weak (watch the video here).

Who the fuck works for Grayson? O'Reilly gave Grayson an opportunity on a silver platter to stick it to O'Reilly and Fox News and Grayson acts like the biggest pussy in the world. This is pathetic. At the very least, Grayson could have gotten one of his staffers to get his own video camera to record the encounter and then do the Olbermann approach to ambush interviews. Undignified? Maybe, but it's a lot more dignified that walking away from a douche like Jenkins with your tail between your legs.

Fuck a duck, don't these people know how to research on the Internet? If they did, then Grayson could have turned the tables on Jenkins and confronted him about revving up the crowd at the recent DC Teabagger event and how that breached journalistic ethics. What is sad is that Grayson is touted as the Democrats attack dog on Capitol Hill. This is sad and pathetic.

Quick Note to People Who Appear on Right-Wing Talk Radio: Record The Conversation
Mark Benjamin of Salon.com recently reported that when he appeared on right-wing radio talk show host Laura Ingraham's show, at crucial times Ingraham hit the mute button so that information he was conveying did not reach her radio audience.

One thing to keep in mind is that the hard right talkers aren't interesting in discussing ideas, they are only interested in ratings and their own reactionary agenda; accordingly, they will not hesitate to play dirty. I've had a pretty good run when it comes to fighting the right on their own turf (check out the transcripts on the sidebar); fortunately, I was able to get my points in before I was cut off or muted. Former Fox News Marc Lamont Hill reports that Sean Hannity liberally used the mute button. I received an e-mail from someone who appeared on Limbaugh's radio show, he told me that he recorded the radio and that when he listened to the tape, and said "yeah, right" to one of Limbaugh's phony points, that Limbaugh or the radio engineer used that mute button and there was a second of dead air instead of his comment, and thus giving the radio audience the impression that the caller had no objections to Limbaugh's remark.

If you call into a right-wing talk show, record the radio and the phone conversation so that you can catch them dishonestly muting you.

The Googlebomb Blog is Back!
Back in 2003, I discovered the power of Googlebombs. In 2005, I created the Google bomb Project Blog. The blog has been very effective in increasing the visibility of negative but truthful web sites to people who do keyword searches of prominent right-wing personalities and ideas. However, in the fall of 2006, other progressive bloggers such as Chris Bowers of MyDD seized upon my idea and publicized the idea of g-bombing GOP congressional candidates (BTW, they failed to give me any credit for coming up with idea). This concerned me because g-bombs are most effective when they occur under the radar (articles in Slate and The New York Times were not helpful). Also, these progressive bloggers didn't know the nuances of g-bombing and their actions threatened to majorly fuck things up with Google (since the publicized attempted to manipulate ranking, Google has changed its indexing to attempt to thwart this manipulation).

I laid low and the blog has been dormant for the past three years. However, I have decided to revamp the blog. The latest target is Glenn Beck.

Here's how to G-Bomb Glenn Beck

1. Copy and paste the following to your web site or on an internet bulletin board:

For Fuck's Sake, Don't Legitimize Fox News!
Potentially bad news:
Fox News Channel and the Obama administration are talking.

The network confirmed a Politico report that Fox news executive Michael Clemente met at the White House on Wednesday with Robert Gibbs, President Barack Obama's press secretary. There were no details given about the meeting.

I think it would be a big mistake for the Obama White House to abandon its war on Fox News. Here are just a few reasons.

Since Media Matters arrived on the scene in 2004, I've listened to a lot less right-wing talk radio. No Need to Make Up Quotes: Rush Limbaugh Has Said Plenty of Racist Things
During the controversy over whether radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh should be allowed to be minority owner of the NFL St. Louis Ram franchise, a couple racist quotes (extolling slavery and MLK assassin James Earl Ray) were falsely attributed to Limbaugh. When I heard about them, I knew they were false. The reasons: they were said to be from the 1990's; had Limbaugh actually made the statements on his radio show in the 90's, I would have heard about them earlier.

Who posted the phony quotes? I don't know but one thing I know is that, like the Killian documents, the fact that some in the media have jumped on the quotes has allowed Limbaugh to play the victim and sidestep the real issue: Limbaugh's longtime pattern of appealing to racists. Yesterday, when I tuned into Limbaugh's radio show, Limbaugh was whining that he was shut out of the NFL because of the phony quotes and that he was unfairly being called a racist. This was the same line of reasoning that I have heard on other right-wing talk radio shows since then. Did Limbaugh or a Limbaugh ally plant the phony quotes in order to garner sympathy for Limbaugh and muddy the waters? I can only speculate.

The fact is that Limbaugh has a history of making racist comments so there's no need for anyone to make anything up. Let's discuss some of Limbaugh's racist comments and actions (this is by no means an exhaustive list):

1. Limbaugh was one of the biggest defenders of the rogue cops who beat Rodney King. In the 1990's, Limbaugh devoted large segments of his radio and television show to try to excuse their actions. For instance, Limbaugh made this incredible statement on his radio show, "The videotape of the Rodney King beating played absolutely no role in the conviction of two of the four officers. It was pure emotion that was responsible for the guilty verdict."

2. Before Trent Lott was exposed for waxing nostalgic about Strom Thurmond's 1948 Dixiecrat presidential run, here's what Limbaugh said about Thurmond's past: "He's not encumbered by being politically correct.... If you want to know what America used to be--and a lot of people wish it still were--then you listen to Strom Thurmond." Irony alert: One recent Limbaugh apologist referred to a "media lynch mob" against Limbaugh; Thurmond's 1948 platform explicitly opposed federal anti-lynching laws.

3. I noted on my blog in 2003 that Limbaugh did a sketch that parodied the 2004 Democratic presidential candidates--comparing them to characters in Gone with the Wind--when Carol Moseley-Braun's name was announced, a sound-alike of the character Prissy shouted, "I don't know nothin' about runnin' for no president!" No surprise, whenever Limbaugh would address Moseley-Braun on his radio show, he would play the theme to The Jeffersons TV show.

4. Limbaugh has a problem with the NAACP. In the past he has called the group "the NAALCP (National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People)." Despite a history of nonviolence (The organization has recently celebrated a century of nonviolent activism), Limbaugh said, "The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

5. I wrote about Limbaugh's reaction to the prospect of Trent Lott resigning form the Senate and Mike Espy, an African-American, taking Lott's seat.

6. Limbaugh on Jesse Jackson: "Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

7. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting reported the following: "In 1994, Limbaugh mocked St. Louis for building a rail line to East St. Louis 'where nobody goes.' East St. Louis is home to roughly 40,000 residents -- 98 percent of whom are African-Americans. One of its 40,000 'nobodies' is star NFL linebacker Bryan Cox."

8. Limbaugh to a black caller, "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

9. Limbaugh on the NFL: "NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons"

10. Limbaugh on American blacks: "They are 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?"

11. In 1992, on his now-defunct TV show, Limbaugh expressed his ire when Spike Lee urged that black schoolchildren get off from school to see his film Malcolm X: "Spike, if you're going to do that, let's complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out."

Unfortunately, I could go on.

The White House Should Damn The Critics and Go Full Speed Ahead Against Fox News
Since the Obama White House has been candid about Fox News being a partisan operation posing as a news outlet, the push back from Fox has been predictable. A few nonpartisans has also questioned the White House's marginalizing of Fox. Here are the main objections:

1. The Obama White House is creating an "enemies list" against journalists, the same way that the Nixon White House acted toward The Washington Post and New York Times. Glenn Beck, appealing to journalists in other media outlets, compared the White House's actions to those of the Nazis. This, of course, is sophistry. The Nixon White House targeted The Post because they were engaging in legitimate journalism that resulted in Nixon's resignation. On the other hand, the Obama White house is calling a spade a spade.

2. Many of Fox News viewers are Democrats and independents, and the White House needs to reach out to these viewers, and that by marginalizing Fox, they are turning off these viewers. Fox News Democrat Pat Caddell recently made this argument on Glenn Beck's Fox News program. As I have pointed out previously, the best way to reach out to non-wing-nut Fox News viewers is to marginalize Fox and inform these people that Fox is not a legitimate news organization. By publicizing FNC's opposition to real journalism, it will turn off non-wing-nuts, leaving Fox with a rump viewership which will further marginalize it.

3. The Obama White House is only helping Fox News by increasing their ratings. Some people who are no fan of Fox News have made this argument on various cable show. However, this is a fallacious argument because, on cable, Fox News is the only game in town when it comes to legitimizing the wing-nut delusions of the hardcore twenty percent of the population that views Obama as a Kenyan-born usurper who is simultaneously a godless communist and a radical Muslim who wants to impose Sharia Law and socialism on Americans. Because the White House is taking on Fox, it will increase the number of wing-nuts watching it, but it will also decrease the number of non-wing-nuts watching it.

There is simply no reason why the Obama White House shouldn't stay the course.

UPDATE: One recent example of Fox News' agenda.

Fox News and Opinion Dynamics Violated Ethical Standards With Health Care Reform Poll
Last night Rachel Maddow addressed some leading questions that Fox News used in a poll of respondents prior to asking their opinion of health care reform. Maddow referenced Nate Silver's article on how the poll used loaded questions to skew the findings, e.g., "Do you think President Obama apologizes too much to the rest of the world for past U.S. policies?" and "Do you think Barack Obama's travel and speaking schedule makes him look more like he is a candidate on the campaign trail or more like he is the president of the United States?"

What I found incredible is that Joe Trippi appeared on the show and balked at denouncing the clearly biased polling. Not only was the poll flawed but it clearly violates the American Association for Public Opinion Research's Code of Professional Ethics & Practice for, among other things, "knowingly select[ing] research tools and methods of analysis that yield misleading conclusions" and for not exercising "due care in developing research designs and survey instruments, and in collecting, processing, and analyzing data, taking all reasonable steps to assure the reliability and validity of results."

Glenn Beck Thinks Teabaggers and 9-12 Flunkies Deserved The Nobel Peace Prize
(Updated below)
This morning when I heard that President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, I knew the wing-nuts would go crazy. Although I try to avoid right-wing talk radio, I tuned in to Rush and Beck. No surprise for El Rushbo (e.g., here and here). However, Beck said that the teabaggers, 9-12ers, and town hall zanies should have received the award.

UPDATE I: A fellow blogger has a transcript:
The Nobel Peace Prize should be turned down by Barack Obama and given, you ready for this, this one is going to make headlines, should be given to the tea party goers and the 9/12 project.

UPDATE II: ThinkProgess has audio and a transcript.

Andrew Breitbart Throws Stones At ACORN from Sun Myung Moon's Glass House

(Updated below)
The right has been in a feeding frenzy since some hidden-camera tapes from right-wing operatives (don't call them journalists) were aired on Fox News. Clearly, the operatives cast a wide net, hoping that lower-level ACORN workers in field offices would make incriminating statements (here's an article on the nature of these sting operations and how people get caught up in them).

The operatives are now in the employ of Andrew Breitbart, a commentator for Sun Myung Moon's Washington Times. Breitbart was so outraged by alleged "deep corruption and unspeakable immorality at the ACORN housing division" that he wrote about it in The Washington Times. As an employee of the Washington Times, whether he knows it or not, Breitbart is contributing to Moon's attempt to legitimize his worldview to the world; Moon said, "That is why Father [Moon referring to himself in the third person] has been combining and organizing scholars from all over the world, and also newspaper organizations, in order to make propaganda." Since Breitbart used the pages of a paper devoted to promoting the Unification Movement's worldview to slam ACORN, I thought a comparison of ACORN and the Unification movement would be in order:

ACORN Versus The Unification Movement
Movement ACORN Unification Movement
Purpose The empowerment of poor and disenfranchised through voter registration, affordable housing, health-care, and neighborhood safety. The aggrandizement of Sun Myung Moon, who, according to Unification dogma, is "humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent"
Does the leadership compel members to engage in degrading, unhygienic sexual acts?NoYes
Has the Movement Scammed Japanese Widows? No To the tune of hundreds of millions, possibly billions, of dollars
View of neo-Confederate groupsStrongly opposes efforts by neo-Confederates and anti-civil rights groups from denying the vote to the poor and minoritiesMoon's Washington Times has had several prominent editors who were neo-Confederates or who supported white supremacy
Rapes Committed by LeadershipNoneMoon procured an underage girl for his drug-addled, adult son
Actual Importing of Underage GirlsNoYes
Supported Apartheid and Salvadorean death squads? No. Yes, Moon was a huge supporter of the WCAL

UPDATE: True to form, Moon's Washington Times has been prominent in spreading the smear that Department of Education official Kevin Jennings had covered up sexual abuse in a school where he had been a teacher.

Obama's Fox News Snub: One Ginormous Reason (Out of Many) Why It's Better That Obama, Not Hillary, Is President
Yesterday, President Obama broke a presidential record by appearing on five talk shows, there was a notable omission from the president's itinerary: Fox News. To no surprise, the response by the fair and balanced channel was swift and nasty. Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace accused the Obama White House of being full of "crybabies" and berated them over their supposed "childishness" and "pettiness." On the Fox News Sunday panel, Wallace, Paul Gigot and Brit Hume berated Obama for not reaching out to as large an audience as possible by appearing on Fox. Wrong!

Snubbing Fox News is a Great Way of Reaching Out to the Right Kind of Fox News Viewer
The core of the Fox News viewership are those twenty percent of the American public that still had faith in George W. Bush after eight years. They are unreachable; they're the birthers, deathers, tenthers, and followers of assorted batshit conspiracy theorists. They the "heavy viewers" who watch the channel all day long.

However, by snubbing Fox News and generating publicity about the snub, Obama is reaching out to the causal Fox News viewer. As I noted a couple years ago, when prominent politicians snub Fox News, it generates publicity that lets the a casual viewer of Fox News that the channel is a political operation masquerading as a legitimate news outlet. This helps to delegitimize Fox with casual viewers and independent voters.

The White House statement diplomatically calling Fox News an "ideological outlet" whose operatives were "whining" over the snub was the cherry on top of great media victory over Murdoch, Ailes, Beck, Wallace, O'Reilly, Hannity, and the reason of the Fox News freak show.

Obama Versus Hillary Regarding Fox News
Recently, a PUMA blogger e-mailed me to see if I still thought that Obama is preferable to the Clintons. My answer: fucking-a right I do! This episode shows that Obama and his posse know the score: they put a foot to the asses of Roger Ailes and his lame-ass FNC operatives.

This is a stark contrast to when the Clintons were in the White House. They failed miserably when it came to the right's rat-fucking (I have posts on the Clintons' appalling ineptitude here and here). Worse, the Clintons did not learn any lessons from the past. During the 2008 campaign, even after there was no chance of winning the nomination, they gave credibility to the very miscreants--e.g., Ailes, Sun Myung Moon, Limbaugh, and Richard Mellon Scaife--who drove American politics into the gutter during the 90's (I have posts on this phenomena here and here). The Clinton campaign's cluelessness allowed them to work hand-in-hand with Limbaugh's Operation Chaos strategy to mortally wound Obama. Fortunately, Limbaugh's strategy failed--no thanks to the Clinton campaign.

There is simply no comparison between Obama and the Clintons when it comes to dealing with the hard right.

Dueling Obits: History's Liberal Bias Once Again Rears Its Ugly Head
Until now, I haven't written anything about the passing of Teddy Kennedy. There are two reasons: 1) I have been very busy; and 2) I couldn't write anything that wasn't already written.

That changed on Sunday when I watched Fox News Sunday. Host Chris Wallace and Fox News' vice president of News (and former Moonie Times operative) Bill Sammon essentially cribbed from a Newsbusters article bemoaning the alleged double standard regarding the New York Times obituaries for Kennedy and former senator Jesse Helms:
CHRIS WALLACE: I also want to talk about the media coverage of Ted Kennedy since his death this week -- not only the amount of it, which was extraordinary, but also the tone of it. And I want to put up the first paragraph of the New York Times story on Ted Kennedy's death. This was the first paragraph this week. "Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a son of one of the most storied families in American politics, a man who knew acclaim and tragedy in near equal measure, and who will be remembered as one of the most effective lawmakers in the history of the Senate, died late Tuesday night."

Now, here's the first paragraph of the Times story on the passing of Jesse Helms last year. "Jesse Helms, the former North Carolina senator with the courtly manner and mossy drawl, who turned his hard-edged conservatism against civil rights, gay rights, foreign aid and modern art, died early Friday."

Bill Sammon, I'm sure some people will be offended that I'm even making the comparison between these two men, but that is a striking difference.

BILL SAMMON: It is, and there's two ways to rectify that obvious double standard. One would have been for the New York Times to find something nice to say about Jesse Helms substantively other than his mossy drawl. The other, if you're going to go the -- and I think that's the preferable way to do it, because you want to -- when someone dies, you want to find something nice to say. The other way, if they wanted to be fair, would -- they would have had to put something in the Ted Kennedy lead about Chappaquiddick, about his demagoguery of Robert Bork being, you know, lunch counter America and back alley abortions and all that kind of thing. But they didn't. So either way you do it, it's unfair, and that was a striking example.

What bullshit. Kennedy and Helms were opposites. Kennedy was a man from a privileged background who fought for the underdog and for the expansion of civil rights. Helms was from a modest background but was a shill for predatory interests and fought against human rights. When Helms wasn't shilling for the tobacco industry and factory hog farms, he was promoting the neo-Confederate movement, Salvadorean death squads, tribalism, philistinism, and sterile fundamentalism (Helms helped Jerry Falwell become a national figure in the 1970's).

Helms was a classic "Dixie demagogue." Michael Lind succintly described Helms:
Having crushed the Republican and Populist parties, the oligarchs imposed a one-party dictatorship on the region, with secret state surveillance units and occasional collaboration between the police and the Ku Klux Klan. In its economy, the South was a banana republic, a commodity-exporting resource colony in which a "comprador bourgeoisie" of local landowners and local businessmen collaborated with investors in New York and elsewhere in fleecing the region.

To serve their interests, the old latifundist families and corporate elites hired "Dixie demagogues," who were to genuine populists like William Jennings Bryan what a Disney pirate is to a pirate. All of them were entertaining. Some began as entertainers, like musician-slash-flour miller W. Lee "Pass the Biscuits, Pappy" O'Daniel, who went from hosting the "Hillbilly Flour" radio show to the Texas governor's mansion in 1939. The "Dixie demagogues" denounced various supposed enemies of the white tribe, but with two exceptions -- Huey Long and George Wallace -- they never threatened the rule of the country clubs and courthouse gangs. Jesse Helms was one of these theatrical quasi-populists, an uncomplicated establishment conservative who parlayed a liberal-baiting radio show into a political career. Like other faux-homespun Southern conservatives, he employed rhetorical populism against blacks, homosexuals, liberals, professors, modern artists and "common-ists" in the service of his business backers, most noticeably North Carolina's tobacco industry.

History has a liberal bias because liberals like Ted Kennedy have promoted the campaigns that have expanded human rights while right-wingers like Helms cynically fought reforms that enfranchised his fellow Southerners.

The Public/Private Divide
Helms and Kennedy are opposites in another area: the public/private divide. On Rush Limbaugh's radio show this week, guest-host neoconservative Mark Steyn faulted some liberals for saying that Kennedy's public achievements make up for his failures in private life--namely his boozing and womanizing.

This is true. Although Kennedy fought for the poor and disenfranchized, his personal conduct was notorious. This is the mirror opposite of Helms, who despite his racist and reactionary views, was--by all accounts, the quintessential Southern gentlemen in his personal life. My response: if Kennedy boned an occasional barista on his own time, who the fuck cares? What matters is defending the rights of Americans in public policy (I previously discussed the issue of private versus public vice here) It comes down to this: If you were a Mississippi black in 1965 who were you going to depend upon, people like Kennedy or Helms? That's why history has judged Kennedy more favorably than Helms.

Must Read
Paul Krugman on the hard right:
Sure enough, President Obama is now facing the same kind of opposition that President Bill Clinton had to deal with: an enraged right that denies the legitimacy of his presidency, that eagerly seizes on every wild rumor manufactured by the right-wing media complex.

This opposition cannot be appeased. Some pundits claim that Mr. Obama has polarized the country by following too liberal an agenda. But the truth is that the attacks on the president have no relationship to anything he is actually doing or proposing. . .

. . .The truth is that the factors that made politics so ugly in the Clinton years — the paranoia of a significant minority of Americans and the cynical willingness of leading Republicans to cater to that paranoia — are as strong as ever. In fact, the situation may be even worse than it was in the 1990s because the collapse of the Bush administration has left the G.O.P. with no real leaders other than Rush Limbaugh.

Democrat [sic] Derangement Syndrome
Thank god for Media Matters for America. They listen to Rush, Hannity, and Beck so that I don't have to. However, I was listening to El Rushbo last week and I caught something that was particularly amusing. Limbaugh, like most wing-nuts, has the habit of using the word "Democrat" as an adjective when referring to matters relating to the Democratic Party (Hendrik Hertzberg has a succinct article on the matter). The habit apparently is deeply so ingrained in Limbaugh that he used it even when he was speaking about a small "d" democratic concept; last week, Limbaugh spoke about people who allegedly want to "sabotage the democrat [sic] process."

Attending the 2009 Sean Hannity Freedom Concert
(UPDATED)
I attended the 2009 Sean Hannity Freedom Concert in San Diego yesterday. I can't disclose how I got in or how I got my really good seat that put me next to the stage and near to the Hannity clan (who were having a great time) and allowed me to post the first online photo of the Hannity's rather fetching wife.

Damn, I didn't see too many non-white people. Reminded me of the Bill O'Reilly event I covered for this blog in 2003 or the Nader 2000 campaign rally I attended.

I saw Carrie Prejean (who earlier was a guest on hanity's Fox News TV show before the concert (she also breifly spoke at the concert). Other non-musicians who appeared were actors Jon Voight and Jim Caviezel and Hannity's friend and fellow talk radio jock Mark Levin (I have written about Levin (click here and scroll down).

Performing at the concert were Lee Greenwood, Charlie Daniels, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Michael W. Smith. Hannity came out and sang "The Devil went Down to Georgia"; Hannity changed the lyrics a little near the end of the song, he tells the Devil, "I done told you once you liberal son of a bitch, I'm the best there's ever been"). The weirdest moment was during Michael W. Smith's performance. Smith introduced actor Jim Caviezel (who played Jesus in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ). Caviezel spoke of his troubles during the filming such as dislocating his arm and being struck by lightning and how Smith's songs got him through the difficult shoot. Smith then sang a song as Caviezel sat on stage.

When I was in line to get into the venue, a follower of fringe presidential candidate Lyndon Larouche handed me the pamphlet pictured on the right that superimposes a photo of Obama with Hitler. That alone doesn't becasue LaRouchies go to progressive events too. However, it was rather revealing that when Hannity's fellow radio talk show host Mark Levin told the crowd about taking on "Obama and his brownshirts."

I will update this post later. One final quick thought: I knew I had to take some of the finest SoCal chronic with me to the event. There were 13,000 people attending a music concert and I was probably the only one there who was baked.

LOL! I Attended Sean Hannity's Freedom Concert 2009 in San Diego Last Night jill rhodes hannity wife
I had one of the best seats in the house to boot! I was right by the stage sitting near to Hannity's wife Jill Rhodes Hannity. I was able to get a picture of her (this seems to be the only online pic of her; BTW, that's Billy Ray Cyrus on the screen).

Important Note: I realize this is a small picture; for a large picture of Jill Hannity, click here and scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page. Also, go to the main page of this blog for more updates and articles

The experience was a total trip. I will have more later. Tease: there was more than one Obama/Nazi reference last night.

UPDATE: here's my post on the event.

UPDATE II: Media Matters exposes a blatent Hannity smear of President Obama. Here's a hilarious video clip of The Daily Show's Jon Stewart correcting the smear. Additional update: More recently, Stewart addressed another flagrant example of Hannity taking an Obama Quote out of context. If the case against Obama is so strong, why does Hannity have to distort his words?

UPDATE III: I've been on Hannity's radio show twice; check out the hilarious transcripts of my discussions with Hannity, here and here. They're priceless. Also, check out the sidebar (under the heading "Talk Radio Transcripts" for hilarious transcripts of my on-air conversations with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, and others.

Don't believe him for a minute. Even as as the twin towers were still smoldering, Hannity was part of a Moonie Times smear campaign to distort a speech by former president Clinton to give people the false impression that Clinton was blaming America for the attacks. Read about it here and here; (5) Hannity is one of the usual suspects who used Sudanese propaganda to smear Bill Clinton; (6) Here's a blog post on the problems with the Hannity & Colmes show; (7) My article on Hannity's hypocrisy regarding Ann Coulter's denigrating comments about the 9/11 widows.

Here's some revealing empirical evidence that Hannity is a total wuss [NOTE: if this link does not work at first, refresh it or click here for a truncated version--also I reprint it in the addendum of this post--scroll down to the end]. Hannity has also chickened out of debates with Ed Schultz and Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson.

11) Notice how Hannity criticizes people opposed to Bush's ineptitude in Iraq with the canard that they are undermining "the troops in harm's way and undermine their commander in chief while they're at war"? Here are some quotes by Hannity at a time in which we had a president who knew how to use the military.
12) Hannity, of course, defended Ann Coulter's Moussaoui-like attacks on women who lost their husbands on 9/11.
