Since the early 1960's, the conservative movement has tried to distance itself from the loony ideas of the late Robert Welch and the John Birch Society (Welch believe that President Eisenhower was part of the communist conspiracy). In 1961, Buckley's National Review devoted an entire issue to repudiating the Birchers. The Birchers have still been around but were not a force in the American political dialogue--until recently. Glenn Beck has tried to mainstream quasi-Bircher thought with his popularization of the writings of Mormon reactionary Cleon Skousen (who was considered extreme to even the Birchers). In February 2010, the Birchers were a co-sponsor of the 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C. Just today I was flipping through the radio and heard right-wing radio jocks Quinn and Rose touting an article about the START Treaty from the Bircher publication New American. I was able to check out a little of George W. Bush's interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity. One thing I found informative was that Hannity, at long last, admitted that there were no WMDs in Iraq and the basis for the war was bogus (to no surprise, Hannity expresses sympathy for Bush asking him how he felt after the discovery, “Frustrating for you?” To those of us familiar with Hannity during Bush's rule, at least it's progress. After it was acknowledged by everyone that there were no WMDs, Hannity and Fox News operatives insisted that they either found WMDs (click here, here, and here) or that WMDs were not in Iraq because they were moved. I wonder when Hannity came around to the truth. Tuesday, November 09, 2010

Salon.com's Joan Walsh was great: MATTHEWS: What do you find of [George W. Bush's] remarks with Matt Lauer the other night educational? Anything new there? WALSH: I don`t think there`s anything terribly new there. He wants to make it clear that he stood up to Cheney. He wants to make it clear that he was really his own man, and so he reveals a few things that basically we already new about Libby. I find it -- the idea that Libby was a soldier on the battlefield left behind is just so self- pitying and so dramatic on Cheney`s part. But I guess I... (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: Especially since Cheney made a point of never being a soldier on the field, with five deferments. WALSH: Really. Really. Exactly. (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: And so the common soldier on the field, or use that reference, like I`m an old battle hand. I have been out there as a warrior. I know how these... WALSH: And we`re all out there taking fire, when we`re sitting in comfy offices and we`re outing a CIA agent and putting her in danger. Watch the video. Friday, November 05, 2010

In 2008, after Barack Obama had nearly gained enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, Rush Limbaugh launched "Operation Chaos" encouraging GOP voters to vote for Hillary in the Democratic primary (by this time in the process, McCain had enough delegates for the GOP nomination). Fox News helped out by puffing up Hillary. Limbaugh's goal was riots in the streets during the Democratic convention in Denver. Fortunately, Limbaugh's project--though it caused a few scares--was a failure (apparently, Limbaugh was trying to make up for almost singlehandedly losing the Senate for the GOP in 2006; his asshole move of accusing Michael J. Fox of faking his Parkinson's disease symptoms cost the GOP the Missouri Senate seat and control of the Senate). We should return the favor in 2012 by encouraging Democrats and progressives to support one of the following Republican candidates in 2012: 1) An early front-runner who would be a weak candidate in the general election such as Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee; or 2) A challenger to a GOP front-runner who would be strong in the general election. This is something that progressive operatives should be thinking about now. It can be done cheaply and effectively. Thursday, November 04, 2010

Fox News president Roger Ailes hires Two types of progressives or Democrats: 1) Those who have noting nice to say about the Democratic Party (e.g., Tammy Bruce, Pat Caddell, and Zell Miller; remember him and his claim that the Democratic Party was no longer a national party?) or 2) liberals who have no clue. Included in this category are Alan Colmes, Lanny Davis (click here and here), Terry McAuliffe, and Juan Williams. After National Public Radio fired Williams, he's been taking the role of victim. Two days ago, on Fox News Sunday, he and the other panel members bemoaned NPR's alleged unfairness. What a sham. When Rupert Murdoch brought Roger Ailes on as head of Fox News, one of the first things Ailes did was to purge liberals from the staff, not because of anything they did but because of their personally held political beliefs. Former president of Fox News Joe Peyronnin told Al Franken the following things: I had about forty people working for me and [Roger Ailes] asked some of them if they were liberal or not. There was a litmus test. He was trying to figure out who was liberal or conservative when he came in, and try to get rid of the liberals. Ailes not only purged liberals form Fox, he has promoted right-wing operatives like Bill Sammon who have engaged in serious acts of journalistic misconduct (Sammon is now Fox News' Washington Managing Editor and a Vice President for the network). Williams has had a thirteen year gig on Fox News mainly because he's a pushover. In the words of Salon.com's David Talbot: "Fox likes its liberals soft and chewy, the better to eat them, my dear." During his tenure at Fox, had Williams grown a pair (and a brain) and assertively debated the right-wingers, Ailes would have found a way to get rid of him, too. ADDENDUM: Just How Clueless is Juan Williams? Last Friday, Williams was a guest on Sean Hannity's radio program where he complimented the host on his "integrity." Monday, October 25, 2010

Yesterday, National Public Radio fired Juan Williams because of some of his opinion about Muslims voiced on The O'Reilly Factor. Williams should have been fired, but not for making those comments. He should have been fired because he was being paid to be a correspondent for a fraudulent pseudo-journalistic organization, Fox News. This association is clearly in violation of The Corporation for Public Broadcasting's code of ethics. I addressed similar issues with Mara Liasson a few years ago. UPDATE: A couple years ago, I spoke with Williams about Sun Myung Moon and his influence on the Washington media and he didn't have a clue. Thursday, October 21, 2010

It was disheartening to hear about the outrageous invasion of privacy of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi that led to his suicide. Although there has been a lot of progress in terms of attitudes toward members of the LGBT community over the past few decades, there will always be those who hassle others because of their differences. However, there is one important thing to keep in mind: the people who harassed Clementi are facing serious criminal charges and ostracism from most Americans, in the 1980's, Laura Ingraham used harassing and violating the privacy of gay college students as a a launching pad for a talk radio career and a gig as a Fox News News contributor. Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) is holding hearings in which he is looking into Goldline International, a gold investment company and prominent advertiser on Glenn Beck's radio show. Weiner is mercilessly grilling Scott Carter, Goldline's executive vice president. I listened briefly to Beck radio shwo this morning and Beck is unapologetic for being affiliated with the shady company. No big surprise. Beck (along with other wing-nut radio talkers such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity) has shilled for IncomeAtHome.com, a front for some network marketing distributors for Herbalife. None of this is a surprise to me. Right-wing talk jocks don't give a damn about their audience--they think their listeners are a bunch of boobs for believing crap they know not to be true. Scam artists also know that the right-wing talk jocks have audiences of extremely gullible people; therefore, it makes sense to sell their questionable-at-best investment opportunities to these people. It would be amusing if it were not for the good (but naive) people who are scammed out of their money. UPDATE: Watch Weiner talk to Keith Olbermann about Goldline (last night's Countdown episode). Those of you familiar with this blog know that I love to crash parties (and that I crashed the 2002 Oscars)--my motto: "No invitation, no problemo." California Assemblyman Anthony Portantino is trying to unleash The Man on crashers: A proposed law set to go before California's Legislature this month would make one of Hollywood's cherished utterances — "You're not on the list" — carry grave new consequences. It's a measure aimed at making the act of party crashing a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine or both. This is misguided and wrong. Now that it has been shown that Shirley Sherrod was wrongly accused of racism because of a selectively edited video on Andrew Breitbart's website that gave the polar opposite impression of Sherrod's actual views. Conservative David Frum knew the score when he wrote the following On the phone on the evening of July 20, a friend asked me: "Can Breitbart possibly survive?" I could only laugh incredulously. I answered: "Of course he'll survive, and undamaged. The incident won't matter at all."If history is any guide, Frum is right. Two recent non-ACORN examples: 1. In 2001, then-Washington Times reporter Bill Sammon wrote a book At Any Cost: How Al Gore Tried to Steal The Election. The book didn't have any footnotes for a very good reason: in at least one instance, Sammon cited a newspaper article to give his reader the direct opposite impression of the article's content. A Washington Post article detailed how in a meeting with advistors, Gore gave his highest priority to the country. Sammon carefully edited the incident to give the exact opposite impression to his readers: Sammon libelously claimed that Gore gave his lowest priority to the country, writing that Gore "was looking out for Number One, plain and simple." Bob Somerby of The Daily Howler discovered Sammon's serious journalistic misconduct and wrote about it (I also wrote about it later). The consequences for Sammon: nothing happened. In fact, Sammon eventually become Vice President and Managing Editor of Fox News. Talk about failing your way up. 2. Last year, Sean Hannity falsely accused President Obama of "decided to give 9/11 sympathizers a voice on the world stage" when he visited Cairo. Like Beitbart, Hannity did this by cropping a video clip to give the exact opposite impression to his viewers that Obama was communicating to the audience in Cairo (watch this priceless video of The Daily Show's Jon Stewart on the incident). Was Hannity fired or even publicly reprimanded? Nope. As long as there are no negative consequences for this kind of distortion, expect to see more of it. Michael Barthel on the phony New Black Panther controversy and the right's attempt to create a new Southern strategy. It's hardly surprising that Fox News is a major player in this (also here). Fox News CEO and president Roger Ailes was an integral part of the original Southern strategy of the 1960's. The other day I was reading Rick Perlstein's Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America and came across this gem about Ailes when he was a media consultant for Richard Nixon prior ot the 1968 election. Here was the description of Ailes finding a ringer for a Q & A television program in which people would ask Nixon questions: Ailes hit upon an idea. . .:"A good, mean, Wallaceite cabdriver. Wouldn't that be great? Some guy to sit there and say, 'Alright, Mac, what about these niggers?'" Nixon would then abhor the uncivility of the words, while endorsing a "moderate" version of the opinion. Ailes walked up and down a nearby taxi stand until he found a cabbie who fit the bill. I was sad to hear about Al and Tipper Gore's recent separation after 40 years of marriage. This reminds me of a conversation I had with Rush Limbaugh during the 2000 campaign. Even though it was ten years ago, the 2000 presidential campaign was in a very different media atmosphere: the right had a very strong echo chamber and the meme from the right was that Al Gore was a habitual liar; unfortunately, Media Matters for America was yet to exist, the blogosphere was very young, and MSNBC had a weak lineup. For a good media postmortem of the 2000 election, click here. One small bright spot during the campaign was when Rush Limbaugh devoted a program to Gore supporters. I got past the screener by not sounding particularly bright and then I kicked Limbaugh's fat ass all over the place (for the transcript, check out my modestly named blog on the subject). Addendum: Some things don't change One of the low points of the 2000 was the unethical reporting of then-Moonie Times operative Bill Sammon. Sammon attempted to create the phony "Floodgate" non-scandal. Also, The Daily Howler uncovered blatent journalistic misconduct in Sammon's book about the campaign. Not only was Sammon not punished for these misdeeds but has since become vice president of News and Washington managing editor of Fox News; Sammon and Fox News are a good match. Also, check out this hilariously scary article, "15 Awful Examples of Christian Propaganda" that has a link to an interesting article on 1970's Christian comics publisher Al Hartley (I didn't know he was the son of right-wing congressman Fred Hartley so-sponsor of the notorious anti-union Taft-Hartley Act). A friend was in a test audience in Los Angeles for the forthcoming film Casino Jack . The film is a biopic of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Even though my friend saw a rough cut of the film, he said it was great and that the test audience seemed to have liked it a lot. The film shows the seamy dealings of GOP bigwigs Tom DeLay and Bob Ney. The film also documents the sleaziness of former Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed. I suspect the film might have a serious negative effect on Reed's attempt to make a political comback. Thank God. Thursday, April 08, 2010

Right-wing talk radio jocks Michael Savage and Mark Levin are competitors (they both have the Noon to 3:00 PM EST time slot. Even though both are certifiable wing-nuts, they hate each other's guts (I wrote about their feud a while ago--click here and scroll down to the addendum). Levin loves to call Savage's show "Weiner Nation" (Savage's real surname is Weiner). A couple of days ago, I was flipping through the stations and heard Savage/Weiner refer to Levin as the guy who "sounds like Groucho Marx's grandmother after a hysterectomy." Thursday, April 01, 2010

My review of Rove's book on Amazon.com is currently listed as the "most helpful critical review." If you like the review, click on the button to indicate that the review was useful to you. Although I didn't have room to point this out, I once spoke on the phone with Joshua Green, the author of the Atlantic article on Rove. I asked him if he was prepared for Rove to accuse him of libeling him. Green was confident that if Rove spoke against him, he could support his claims. I spoke with Bill O'Reilly about Green's allegations in 2005. Thursday, February 25, 2010

Conservative Anti-ACORN Activist Arrested In FBI Wiretap Plot Against Democratic Senator. So here's an interesting twist: James O'Keefe, one of the conservative activists responsible for the infamous "pimp" videos" that prompted Congress to defund the activist group ACORN, has been arrested in connection with a conspiracy to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's offices in Louisiana. An independent report requested by ACORN and conducted by former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger found no pattern "of intentional, illegal conduct by ACORN staff," and a report from the Congressional Research Service found no evidence that ACORN had ever violated the terms of its federal funding. The reports came out too late, however, as Congress had already decided on the basis of the doctored "pimp" videos, to exempt the group from federal funding. A federal judge recently ruled the move amounted to unconstitutional "bill of attainder." According to the report from NOLA.com, O'Keefe was aiding two other men, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan, who were disguised as phone company workers, allegedly as a pretext for tampering with the office's phone system. How's this for a kicker: O'Keefe on Thursday gave a speech to Libertarian Pelican Institute in New Orleans. Well, despite the fact that O'Keefe hasn't been convicted of anything yet, I'm sure the conservative establishment will distance themselves from him as quickly as the Democrats defunded ACORN. Wait, what am I saying -- getting arrested for a politically motivated break-in is practically a badge of honor in the conservative movement. Just ask Chuck Colson or G. Gordon Liddy. Extremism in the pursuit of uh, "liberty" is no vice, after all. UPDATE: According to the FBI affadavit, acquired by POLITICO, the four men involved in the scheme have admitted to entering the office under false pretenses and that they had conspired together to secure entry. A third alleged co-conspirator, Stan Dai, has been identified. Here's what the affadavit says: Subsequently, Flanagan and Basel have admitted to federal agents that they were not telephone repairment and that they entered the office of Senator Landrieu under false pretences. O'Keefe and Dai have also admitted to federal agents that [they?] worked with Flanagan and Basel in the planning, coordination and preparation of the operation. O'Keefe further admitted to recording to Flanagan and Basel inside of Senator Landrieu's office. From a layman's perspective, I'd say that looks pretty bad. But the conservative movement does take care of their own. -- A. Serwer Monday, January 11, 2010

Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry has come under fire because of reports in the new book Game Change that disclosed that Reid made some unfortunate comments about then-candidate Barack Obama being lighted-skinned and not having a "Negro dialect." Not surprisingly, the usual suspects are comparing Reid's comments to the 2002 comments of then Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss) who stepped down because he said that had Strom Thurmond been successful in his 1948 presidential bid on the Dixiecrat ticket, "we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either." They are claiming that there is a double standard regarding the two comments and have called for Reid to step down from his post. This is sophistry. Regarding the claim of a double standard regarding press coverage, it is too easily forgotten that Lott said his comments at Thurmond's birthday party and it was covered by the press who ignored the comments. it wasn't until progressive bloggers forced the DC press corps to cover the comments that other revelations emerged. For instance, the coverage of comments allowed critics to publicize Lott's associations with the white supremacist group, the Council of Conservative Citizens, the modern incarnation of the old White Citizens Councils (on Sean Hannity's radio program, Lott unconvincingly claimed that his associations with the group were tenuous--I reported on this is 2002) The coverage also allowed critics to point out Lott's praise for the old confederacy such as Lott approvingly saying that "[t]he spirit of Jefferson Davis lives in the 1984 Republican platform"). Also, Lott longtime opposition to civil rights was highlighted (such as his opposition to the extension of the Voting Rights Act. As Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting pointed out, the media were largely playing catch-up regarding Lott's abysmal views and actions on civil rights and race relations. On the other hand, Reid has had an excellent record on civil rights and has been a strong advocate of racial equality. Let's look at some of the people and groups coming out against Reid. Last night, Ann Coulter strongly denouncing Reid's comments. Coulter has been a strong defender of the Confederate battle flag and an apologist for the Council of Conservative Citizens. This morning, the radio program for the Washington Times was highly critical of Reid; this despite the fact that the Times has been the home to many virulent racists and white supremacists (also, watch my video on Moon that addresses the Times and white supremacy). These are the people who are trying to speak on racial equality?. Thursday, January 07, 2010
