Success!
A couple weeks ago, John Cloud wrote a puff piece in Time on Ann Coulter in which he made the amazing statement that "Coulter has a reputation for carelessness with facts, and if you Google the words 'Ann Coulter lies,' you will drown in results. But I didn't find many outright Coulter errors."

Fortunately, my site on Coulter's fraudulent book Slander is one of the first sites to pop up for a Google search of "ann coulter lies." Since Cloud's Time piece, this site received thousands of hits because of Google searchs of those keywords. Truth 1, Time 0.

The Accidental Protester: Blogging the anti-J. Lo Demonstration at the Monster-In-Law Premiere
Although I slam LA, there is a lot to do here--especially on the west side. I planned to have a sedate Friday night because I have a weekend of networking and pitching. I walked to Westwood Village to get a shot of wheatgrass juice at Jamba Juice on Linbrook. It would also be a chance to walk by the premiere for Monster-In-Law which is half a block away at the Mann's National Theatre at Linbrook and Gayley. I was mildly curious to see if any Vietnam vets would be there to protest Jane Fonda (Monster-In-Law is Fonda's first film in 15 years). Note: I had no plans to try to crash the premiere after-party because: 1) This film looks like an unimaginative piece of formulaic Hollywood crap that has been marketed down to the lowest common denominator; and 2) I'm still all partied out from the xXx: State of the Union premiere party that I crashed on Monday.

After I got my wheatgrass juice and walked out of Jamba Juice, I noticed some people across the street from the premiere were pulling out signs; they were much too young to be Vietnam vets. Then I noticed they were members of Peta whose signs were protesting Monster-In-Law co-star Jennifer Lopez's "fur-laden" fashion line. Not surprisingly, their signs were provocative. My favorite was the sign with the picture of J. Lo wearing a fur and had the caption "J. LO: MONSTER-IN-FUR" and listed the web site, JLoDown.com. I was unaware that J.Lo's fashion line used fur (actually, I was only vaguely aware that she had a fashion line; whenever I hear J. Lo's or Vin Diesel's name, I try to get away from the offending person, news broadcast, etc).

While I have a karma-free diet and lifestyle, there are a few things that cause me to be hesitant about doing a Peta protest. First, I think that sometimes their protest tactics are shrill to the point of driving away people who are sympathetic to at least some of their goals. A good example was the time in 2000, right after Rudy Giuliani was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Peta erected a billboard mocking the "Got Milk" campaign that showed a picture of Giuliani with a milk mustache and the caption, "Got Prostate Cancer?" It seemed that they were picking on the misfortune of a guy who had no dog in the fight--in my book, this is adharmic.

Second, I have some qualms about some of the rhetoric from some Peta members. I am fully supportive of Peta's campaign against animal cruelty--particularly factory farming, which I think has been an ethical, environmental, and health disaster. Nevertheless, when I hear some, but not all, Peta members equate human life with the lives of rats, I wince (I adhere to what Ken Wilber refers to as the Basic Moral Intuition which calls for "the greatest depth for the greatest span").

Third, I'm not a hold-a-sign-and-chant-slogans kind of guy. It's not my bag.

However, I decided to join the protest. Although I have some differences with Peta's goals and methods, fur harvesting is uncool. I grabbed a sign. I also wanted to do it because it would allow me to get a bitchin' sign that I could add to my collection of Hollywood memorabilia (this is my first piece of anti-Hollywood memorabilia).

There were about 200 protesters. I met some really interesting people and had a good time holding a sign. I did some chanting with the group. There were some clever chants such as "J. Lo--Fur Ho!", "Hey, Hey, J. Lo; Animal Abuse Has Got To Go!" and "Hey, J. Lo, What Do You Say? How Many Animals Did You Kill Today?" If J.Lo arrived at the premiere, it was at the back entrance.

There were plenty of media people who covered the protesters. Inside Edition, ET, And Extra filmed us. I spoke with a reporter from the LA Times briefly; I told him Michael Kinsley rocked. I saw a Fox News reporter and asked her if she ever met Roger Ailes; she told me that Ailes is a warm man in person. Whatever.

Consortium News has posted three great articles just in the last week. Robert Parry's latest article is "The Left's Media Miscalculation."

To understand how the United States got into today’s political predicament – where even fundamental principles like the separation of church and state are under attack – one has to look back at strategic choices made by the Right and the Left three decades ago. . .

At this key juncture, leaders of the Right and the Left made fateful choices that have shaped today’s political world. Though both sides had access to similar amounts of money from wealthy individuals and like-minded foundations, the two sides chose to invest that money in very different ways.

The Right concentrated on gaining control of the information flows in Washington and on building a media infrastructure that would put out a consistent conservative message across the country. As part of this strategy, the Right also funded attack groups to target mainstream journalists who got in the way of the conservative agenda.

The Left largely forsook media in favor of “grassroots organizing.” As many of the Left’s flagship media outlets foundered, the “progressive community” reorganized under the slogan – “think globally, act locally” – and increasingly put its available money into well-intentioned projects, such as buying endangered wetlands or feeding the poor.

So, while the Right waged what it called “the war of ideas” and expanded the reach of conservative media to every corner of the nation, the Left trusted that local political action would reenergize American democracy. . .

As the 1990s wore on, mainstream journalists adapted to the new media environment by trying not to offend the conservatives. Working journalists knew that the Right could damage or destroy their careers by attaching the “liberal” label. There was no comparable danger from the Left.

So, many Americans journalists – whether consciously or not – protected themselves by being harder on Democrats in the Clinton administration than they were on Republicans during the Reagan-Bush years. Indeed, through much of the 1990s, there was little to distinguish the hostile scandal coverage of Clinton in the Washington Post and the New York Times from what was appearing in the New York Post and the Washington Times.

Maureen Dowd on Bill O'Reilly
One of the panel discussions I saw at last weekend's LA Festival of Books was one with Eric Alterman, Maureen Dowd, John Dean and others. Dowd noted the irony of Bill O'Reilly hosting a "Caribbean Cruise Adventure" considering that the Caribbean was the location of the phone fantasy call he had with Andrea Mackris that resulted in a huge settlement.

I don't have the transcript but you can see it yourself on CSPAN's Book TV next Saturday April 30 (check the schedule here for times). When you watch the audience Q & A, check out the first audience member at the microphone--the guy was a raving crackpot (a LaRouchie?) who began to slam the Jews in the neocon movement.

One final note: if I went on a Caribbean cruise, I certainly wouldn't go with O'Reilly and the last people I would go with would be O'Reilly's cohosts, the Thomas More Law Center--a bunch of puritan defenders of the sectarian right. Whatever.

Sunburned and Hungover
Last night, I crashed the xXx: State of the Union premiere after-party. Details later.

UPDATE: The party. The food was catered by Wolfgang Puck--hamburgers, chicken, fries, onion rings, cheese sticks, cheese and crackers. At the bars, they had a drink named xXx which consisted of 1 ounce of orange juice, 2 ounces of XXX Tequila (XXX Tequila is "the official tequila of xXx: State of the Union"), 3 ounces of pomegranate juice served on the rocks. I don't like tequila so I didn't like it.

They had on display the xXx Muscle Car (a pimped GTO), a pimped Mustang (I don't know whose car this is because I didn't see the film), the Urban Assault Vehicle, and the Advanced Concept Car. Click here to see three out of the four vehicles.

Here's the thing: While I'm all for pimping someone's ride if they drive a car with an uninspired design. However, a 1960's GTO has a classic design; altering it (which is necessary for pimping it) is a great example of gilding the lily.
4/30 UPDATE: the reviews of xXx: State of the Union have not been kind. Someone on the IMDB discussion board called star Ice Cube a "wangsta."

Oh Wow
Zell Miller has a book coming out titled A Deficit of Decency (click here). It's based on a speech he gave on the Senate floor with the same name. In the speech and the book, Miller bemoans "the decline of traditional Christian values of the family, responsibility and sacrifice?where an absence of decency is threatening the heart of America." The forward is by exemplar of moral values and decency, Sean Hannity. Miller is a contributor for the standard of journalistic integrity, Fox News, run by exemplar of moral values and decency Roger Ailes.

Joe Conason on Bill Frist and the Sectarian Right

"Many of these nominees," [Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council] writes, "are being blocked because they are people of faith and moral conviction. These are people whose only offense is to say that abortion is wrong or that marriage should be between one man and one woman."

Clearly, Mr. Perkins has no compunctions about bearing false witness when that serves his political aims. As he well knows, the tiny percentage of blocked Bush nominees weren’t filibustered because of their religious faith, and the controversies surrounding them had little to do with abortion and nothing to do with gay marriage.

Consider Carolyn Kuhl of California, whose nomination was eventually withdrawn. Like many Bush nominees, she is a right-wing judicial activist who would seek to overturn most environmental and consumer protections in the name of property rights. During her stint in the Reagan Justice Department, Ms. Kuhl wrote a memo urging the government to reverse longstanding policy by renewing the federal tax exemption of the infamously bigoted Bob Jones University. As a judge in Los Angeles, she dismissed a lawsuit brought by a cancer patient whose doctor allowed her breast examination to be observed in his office—without her informed consent—by a drug-company salesman.

Or consider Priscilla Owen of Texas, a protégé of Bush political guru Karl Rove, whose decisions on the Texas Supreme Court tended to be most favorable to corporations that bankrolled her judicial campaigns, such as Enron and Dow Chemical. Alberto Gonzales, now serving as U.S. Attorney General, repeatedly criticized her extreme opinions when they were colleagues on the Texas Supreme Court.

These corporate servants in black robes were all too typical of the nominees sent up by the White House. It’s hard to understand how rejecting them offended any religious faith. And when Mr. Perkins implies that Democrats apply a religious test to the Bush nominees, he is lying about that, too.

Oklahoma City: Ten Years Later and Some People Just Don't Learn
I realize it's totally lame but I read David Horowitz's rag, FrontPage Magazine. I have an excuse: I write for HorowitzWatch and I have to see what Horowitz and his gang are up to.

Ten years after the Oklahoma City bombing, a particularly hoary chestnut was resurrected by FrontPage Magazine writer Don Feder:

In 1995, William Jefferson Clinton (never one to shy away from an absurdity) suggested that the Oklahoma City bombing was in part the product of conservative talk show hosts complaining about high taxes and excessive regulation -- thereby promoting disdain for Washington.

The more common variant is that Clinton blamed Rush Limbaugh for inciting the Oklahoma City bombers. In 1995, I remember seeing Limbaugh on his television show (which was produced by Roger Ailes, who is currently running the fair-and-balanced news network) screaming about how Clinton was trying to blame him for the bombing. In her book Slander: Liberal Lies About The American Right, Ann Coulter wrote, "When impeached former president Bill Clinton identified Rush Limbaugh as the cause of the Oklahoma City bombing, he unleashed all the typical liberal curse words for conservatives. He blamed 'loud and angry voices' heard 'over the airwaves in America' that were making people 'paranoid' and spreading hate."

This is right-wing mind rot of the worse kind. It was a lie then and it's a lie now. Here is the offending statment that caused Feder, Limbaugh, Coulter and the rest of the radical right to attack Clinton:

In this country we cherish and guard the right of free speech. We know we love it when we put up with people saying things we absolutely deplore. And we must always be willing to defend their right to say things we deplore to the ultimate degree. But we hear so many loud and angry voices in America today whose sole goal seems to be to try to keep some people as paranoid as possible and the rest of us all torn up and upset with each other. They spread hate. They leave the impression that, by their very words, that violence is acceptable. You ought to see -- I'm sure you are now seeing the reports of some things that are regularly said over the airwaves in America today.

Well, people like that who want to share our freedoms must know that their bitter words can have consequences and that freedom has endured in this country for more than two centuries because it was coupled with an enormous sense of responsibility on the part of the American people.

If we are to have freedom to speak, freedom to assemble, and, yes, the freedom to bear arms, we must have responsibility as well. And to those of us who do not agree with the purveyors of hatred and division, with the promoters of paranoia, I remind you that we have freedom of speech, too, and we have responsibilities, too. And some of us have not discharged our responsibilities. It is time we all stood up and spoke against that kind of reckless speech and behavior.

If they insist on being irresponsible with our common liberties, then we must be all the more responsible with our liberties. When they talk of hatred, we must stand against them. When they talk of violence, we must stand against them. When they say things that are irresponsible, that may have egregious consequences, we must call them on it. The exercise of their freedom of speech makes our silence all the more unforgivable. So exercise yours, my fellow Americans. Our country, our future, our way of life is at stake.

Nowhere does Clinton attempt to implicate Limbaugh. Nowhere does Clinton attempt to blame the bombing on "conservative talk show hosts complaining about high taxes and excessive regulation." Clinton was referring to people who were using the airwaves to foment violence against others and government officials. For example, talk show host G. Gordon Liddy recommended shooting government law enforcement agents in the head and crotch. Talk radio jack Chuck Baker is another example (click here and here).

In fact, Clinton's words show amazing insight about the harm of speech that advocates violence. Had Coulter heeded Clinton's words instead of trying to score cheap political points, she would have had the foresight not to have made the following comment: "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building." (as well as the lame explanation for the original comment: "Of course I regret it. I should have added, 'after everyone had left the building except the editors and reporters'")

I was in the shower when they announced that Germany's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was named Pope. I tried to blog this but Blogger apparently was busy because I imagine other bloggers were blogging the story. I don't have too much to say about the new pope right now except that I wished he chose the name Clement (Quick fact: the last pope named Clement was Clement XIV who was pontiff between 1769 and 1775). To paraphrase the Jeopardy category, for the name alone, I could dig a Pope named Clem. Also, as of 12:39 PM PST, Chick Publications' web site has no response. Bummer.

I didn't read the Time cover story on Coulter. I just read the following from John Cloud's Time story on Atrios' blog:

What the fuck! If you Google "ann coulter lies", the first two sites that pop up are sites administered by me and Dr. Limerick. Both give numerous examples of Coulter's outright deception in just the book Slander. In fact, research by Dr. Limerick and me as well as by other bloggers such as Bob Somerby led to a repudiation of Coulter and Slander in the Columbia Journalism Review.

She Doesn't Enrage Me
The Time cover informs us that Coulter "enrages the left." Actually, most of us realize that she is a joke. That was especially the case for me when I began to read Slander and realized what a bad liar she is. The cover also asks, "Is she serious or just having fun?" Answer: Coulter is the least serious person on the planet. I don't think she is having fun because I suspect she is a profoundly joyless and unhappy person. She is making a lot of money from the mouthbreathers though.

UPDATE: I had a blast at WorldFest. There was a fashion show by the Vegan Vixens. Hubba Hubba! There was great music. Favorites: Carla Hassett and Lisa Gay and Thrill. There's a new documentary about Howard Lyman. The Artivist Film Festival sounds great. Ed Begley Jr. has an all-purpose cleaner. I met some great people. My "Don't Blame. I voted for Kerry" shirt elicited a lot of positive comments. People kept asking me where I got it; I got it here.

Republican Glass Houses
Some bloggers have already commented on the silliness of Byron York's new book The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy: The Untold Story of How Democratic Operatives, Eccentric Billionaires, Liberal Activists, and Assorted Celebrities Tried to Bring Down a President--and Why They'll Try Even Harder Next Time

My grievance is with part of the title; it mentions "eccentric billionaires" on the left. Certainly York is referring to George Soros. Soros is eccentric compared to whom? Certainly not the right-wing billionaires who have been funding the right's media and policy apparatus.

Who are these right-wing billionaires? The top two billionaire funders of right-wing and Republican causes are self-proclaimed messiah Sun Myung Moon and Richard Mellon Scaife. Both have contributed hundreds of millions--if not billions--to the American right over the past three decades.

Let's first deal with Moon, the convicted felon, self-proclaimed messiah, blesser of the Holy Handkerchiefs rape-enabler, Japanese widow-scammer, theocrat, and hater of America. For a quick comparison of Soros and Moon, please consult this handy chart.

While Moon has a messiah complex, Scaife has a major persecution complex. He believes that Bill Clinton is responsible for bumping off dozens of people who got in his way. This urban legend, known as the Clinton Body count, was a staple not only for loons like Scaife and the mouthbreathers at the Free Republic web site, but was put forth by the current head of the fair and balanced network, Roger Ailes, as well as Rush Limbaugh and various members of Congress. Here's a short primer on Scaife and some of the more noxious of the ratfucking hacks he's been funding since the early 1990's to promote his loony conspiracy theories (by the way, David Horowitz, one of Scaife's biggest monkey-boys, got creamed with a pie the other day).

I could go on, but I'm busy. I think the test of the strength of an argument is whether anyone wants to challenge it. Does anyone on the right want to defend Scaife or Moon?

Bad News for DeLay is Bad News for Us (At Least for the Time Being)
I wish the recent bad news for Tom DeLay hadn't happened now. I agree with Kevin Drum that it would be great to have DeLay around for another six months. It would be a lot better for DeLay to go down next year--when there's an election. If DeLay cared about the GOP, he would have resigned by now--it's his megalomania that keeps him in his current position. Let's hope DeLay stays around for as long as possible.

Yes, the press corps is giving its Standard Free Pass to Mark Levin's gong-show best-seller (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 4/5/05). But then, that's what this group does best; Dahlia Lithwick hasn't heard, but they also gave a free pass to the gong-show best-seller, Unfit for Command, that transformed the Bush-Kerry race. Indeed, the mainstream press has been AWOL for decades regarding the work of the kooky-con right. Not for them the grimy task of confronting the pseudo-con discourse being ginned in such kooky-con precincts. It's simpler to count up Ann Coulter's footnotes-praising the scribe for her brilliant scholarship-while failing to note that the mountain of notes were, in fact, largely bogus (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 7/22/02). Levin's free pass? It's the latest example of their long refusal to confront the rough, nasty men who have made such a long-running joke of your discourse. Lithwick is right about Mark Levin's treatment. But she's wrong about everything else.

Dharmic Party Crashing
When I was writing an upcoming post about journalistic ethics (it should be up today; UPDATE: it will be up Wedsnesday), I asked what it is like to be a fraud. I don't know because I try to be myself at all times--let the chips fall where they may (perhaps this isn't the wisest thing because I tend not to be everyone's cup of tea).

Then I had a thought; there is a specific instance in which I phony things up: when I crash Hollywood parties. I don't want to give specifics about how I get in, but often it involves using deception about who I am. I don't think that's a betrayal of my values because it gets me into some really slammin' places (I just wish that so many Hollywood people at these events weren't completely full of themselves; the Jeremy Piven character on Entourage is a common type I have met).

That got me to think: there should be a code of ethics for party crashers. I might or might not create one but one thing that goes against my morality is to crash a family affair. The upcoming Hollywood film The Wedding Crashers has a premise that goes against my code of ethical party crashing. Definitely not my style.

Great Fucking Trailer
I was kind of skeptical when I heard they were doing a dramatic film about the people who were the focus of the Stacy Peralta's documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. However, when I saw the trailer for Lords of Dogtown, I became convinced they have a winner.

12:01 PM PST UPDATE:Nothing on Fox News' web site. Maybe I heard wrong. I was getting out of the shower when I heard news that they were getting confirmation that the Pope died. Nothing official.

Sin City
I haven't got to see Sin City yet. It seems that a lot of people want to see it.

In case you didn't know, Sin City is an adaptation of the Frank Miller comic book/graphic novel series with the same name. Trivia: Miller's Sin City isn't the only comic book with that title; Jack Chick has an appallingly homophobic (the gay minister has a demon attached to him) comic book tract with the same title.
